Friday, January 29, 2027 (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (CST)
Description
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into the helping professions, it warrants careful, ethical, and informed consideration. This foundational-level workshop invites participants to critically examine how emerging AI tools can both support and complicate professional practice within forensic, clinical, and supervisory contexts. Participants will explore how AI technologies can assist with routine administrative tasks, enhance professional writing and documentation, support assessment formulation and treatment planning, and improve psychoeducation and client engagement, while also recognizing the inherent limitations, risks, and ethical considerations associated with AI use in sensitive, high-stakes work. Particular attention will be given to issues of confidentiality, bias, professional judgment, documentation integrity, and the appropriate role of human decision-making when working with justice-involved and vulnerable populations. Designed for therapists, evaluators, supervisors, probation officers, researchers, and victim services professionals, this workshop offers a balanced, practical examination of both the promises and potential pitfalls of integrating AI into forensic and clinical work, emphasizing a responsible, transparent, and ethically grounded application. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to: Understand AI terminology in this context (e.g., client-facing, generative vs. interactive AI, agentic AI, etc.) Identify appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI tools in assessment, treatment planning, documentation, supervision, and research. Evaluate ethical, legal, and professional risks associated with AI use, including concerns related to confidentiality, bias, over-reliance, and informed consent. Evaluate the appropriateness of integrating AI tools in your professional setting by weighing the pros and cons discussed in the session
